When out in the woods during the winter season safety and survival are of utmost importance.
Seven things that you can do to increase your survival chances if caught stranded in the woods are............. 1:DO Find or create shelter: it is important to have some form of shelter to protect your body from the elements and the animals. To build a shelter we can use boughs and sticks and even snow to build something overhead and around you, on low ground. 2: DO Stay Hydrated: It is important to remain hydrated because the body depends on water for survival. Without water we become confused and unable to think rationally. The body relies on it to control body temperature and joint function. 3: DO stay in one location: Don't wander off. It is easy to get disoriented while in the woods. Bad weather or fog can occur quickly and prevent you from returning to your shelter. Stay close to your shelter and belongings. 4: DO make yourself visible: Use anything available to make yourself pop-out from the area you're in. Make foot prints in the snow, wear bright colors that stick out, use materials available to write SOS and tie stuff available onto branches so you're visible from the land or air. 5: DO build a fire: The importance of building a fire is paramount. A fire can help you stay warm and keep wild animals away. It can also help people find you. 6: DO tell others where you are going: Always have a plan. Tell some one ( like a neighbour or a friend) about where you're going and when you expect to return. 7: DO signal for help: At any available opportunity, you should signal for help. Use bright colors, cell phones, mirrors and smoke or anything available to help others locate you easily. |
